Jeroboam Establishes Golden Calves

1 Kings 12:25-33

Chapter 12
25 Jeroboam built Shechem in Mount Ephraim, dwelt in it, went out from there, and built Peniel. 26 Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will return to the house of David." 27 If this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, the heart of this people will turn to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah, and they will kill me and turn to Rehoboam king of Judah. 28 The king consulted and made two golden calves. He said to them, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Behold your God, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt." 29 He put one in Bethel and the other in Dan. 30 And it happened that this word was for Sin, and the people went before the one as far as Dan. 31 And he made the high places temple and he made priests from the ends of the people, who were not from the sons of Levi. 32 And Jeroboam made a feast in the eighth month on the fifteenth day of the month like the feast that was in Judah, and he went up on the altar. In this way he did in the house of God to sacrifice to the calves that he had made. And he set up in the house of God the priests of the high places that he had made. 33 And he went up on the altar that he had made in the house of God on the fifteenth day in the eighth month, in the month that he invented from his heart, and he made a feast for the sons of Israel, and he went up on the altar to offer incense.
